The campaign theme, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!™”, focuses on educating the public about the importance of having properly installed and functioning smoke alarms in every household.

Smoke alarms are a key line of defense in detecting fires early and giving families the time they need to escape. Statistics show that working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half, yet many homes are still without these essential devices, or have alarms that are old or disabled.

Fire departments across the country are encouraging homeowners to:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly to ensure they’re working properly.
  • Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year, and replace the entire unit every 10 years or as recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Develop and practice a home fire escape plan with all family members, ensuring everyone knows two ways out of every room.

Throughout the week, fire departments will host community events, safety demonstrations, and educational workshops to help families understand how to maintain and test their smoke alarms effectively.
